In July, associate professor of mechanical engineering, Dirk M. Luchtenburg, attended the 2026 AAS/AIAA Astrodynamics Specialist Conference, held in Whistler, British Columbia. The conference brought together researchers specializing in spacecraft dynamics, orbital mechanics, control, and applied mathematics to share recent developments in astrodynamics.
At the conference, Professor Luchtenburg presented his paper, "Controlled Transport and Station Keeping Between Periodic Cycles in the Standard Map," co-authored with Professor Shane D. Ross of Virginia Tech. The research explores how small control inputs can guide trajectories in nonlinear dynamical systems to develop more efficient spacecraft transfer strategies.
He also co-authored a second paper, "Dynamical Classification of Chaotic Cislunar Trajectories via Resonance Structure," alongside Amelie M. Lutz, Anjali Rawat, and Shane D. Ross of Virginia Tech, examining chaotic trajectories within the Earth–Moon system.
A highlight of the conference was reconnecting with Cooper Union alumnus Evan L. Lutchmidat ME'24, who is currently conducting graduate research at Virginia Tech. Lutchmidat presented his research on autonomous guidance, navigation, and control of lunar transfer trajectories and also shared how methods he learned in Professor Luchtenburg's Space Dynamics (ME424) course continue to support his graduate research.
The conference provided an opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow researchers, explore advancements in astrodynamics, and bring new perspectives to his research and teaching.
